Top 3 Bicycle Accident Myths in Fort Pierce Florida

Bike3

For recreational purposes, a bicycle is a fun way to get from point A to point B.  In Florida, a bicycle is also an additional mode of transportation for many Fort Pierce residents, considering the great weather the Sunshine State brings year-round. But bike riding can be dangerous as well since Florida has the highest number of bicycle accidents across the country.

People create their own thoughts and ideas when it comes to bicycles. This includes whether they should be on the road, the rules and laws surrounding them, and whether they actually have rights or not. As a result, these ideas can form several myths.

Today, Sholtes Law will eliminate those ideas by informing Fort Pierce and Treasure Coast residents of the top 4 bicycle accident myths:

Myth #1:  A Bicycle Has No Business Being on the Road

While this is up to debate and is often a controversial topic, Florida law has legally defined a bicycle as a vehicle propelled solely by human power.

The Uniform Traffic Control Laws make it clear that a bicycle is a vehicle and that the rider is a driver. Bicyclists, just like car drivers, have rights and must obey the rules of the road such as traffic signals and signs.

Myth #2:  No One Rides Bicycles in this Area

Did you know that Martin County is a hot spot for bike rides?

Myth#3:  Okay, But Bicycle Accidents Rarely Happen

This statement is not true. Bike accidents are happening every day, much like car accidents. But most bicycle accidents do not happen between bicycle riders. Bicycle accidents usually happen due to a car driver’s negligence.

WPTV News reported in March that a child suffered non-life threatening injuries due to being struck by a vehicle.  This bicycle accident occurred in Martin County.

According to an article in TC Palm, bicyclist-motorist accidents claimed the lives of seven people on the Treasure Coast.

What do I do if I’m Injured on My Bicycle?

If you suffer injuries will riding a bike, you should discuss your bicycle accident with a personal injury attorney who has experience handling these types of cases.  Don’t be afraid to check out the reviews on the attorney to see how he or she has helped other people with their cases.

Once you hire the attorney, he or she can help you file an insurance claim so you don’t have to deal with the insurance company and all of the paperwork involved. With an attorney on your side, you have a better chance of recovering the greatest amount of compensation.
